Gravity Shift

From Concise Reformed Dogmatics

“Whenever atonement is considered to be universal, its content is reduced (Murray, 1955, 74). Atonement then can no longer be atonement through satisfaction. We agree with Bavinck: “If Jesus is truly the Savior, he must also really save his people, not potentially but really and in fact, completely and eternally” (R.D., 3: 467). Otherwise the center of gravity is shifted from Christ to the Christian. The nature of faith also changes, for it is then no longer receptive with respect to salvation in Christ, but is given a creative role in making salvation effective. Faith then becomes work that needs to be added to the work completed by Christ, who has done everything for us already.” (528)
